UK Invests £300 Million in Cutting-Edge AI Supercomputers

In an ambitious move to bolster its scientific prowess, the United Kingdom has announced a £300 million investment in two state-of-the-art supercomputers dedicated to artificial intelligence (AI) research. This investment is set to empower the nation's scientific talent with the tools needed to ensure that advanced AI models meet stringent safety standards.
The announcement came on the heels of the first day of the Global AI Safety Summit, marking a significant commitment to the future of AI. The two supercomputers, known as "AI Research Assets," are intended to support research into creating safer advanced AI models, a cornerstone topic of the summit.
In a statement on platform 'X', UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak emphasized that this investment would ensure that "British scientific talent has the tools needed to make the most advanced AI models safe."
The new supercomputers will provide UK researchers with more than 30 times the capacity of the country's current largest public AI computing tools. They are expected to be operational by the summer of 2024.
This development will bolster the UK's fastest supercomputer, Isambard-AI, constructed by Hewlett Packard Enterprise and equipped with 5000 advanced AI chips from Nvidia.
Additionally, a second device named 'Dawn' will be created with Dell, running on 1000 AI chips from Intel. It's noteworthy that the UK had already spent $130 million on AI chips in August.
According to the UK announcement, the Isambard-AI will be capable of computing over 200 petaflops, or 200 quadrillion calculations per second.
Significantly, US Vice President Kamala Harris attended the first day of the summit, where she and Sunak agreed on the need for "close collaboration on the opportunities and risks presented by advanced AI models."
In her address, Harris warned of potential cyberattacks of unprecedented scale on AI-designed biological weapons that could endanger millions of lives. She stressed that the moment is "urgent" for collective action on this issue.
These statements from the US Vice President came just days after the Biden administration issued an executive order on AI safety standards it plans to implement.
